Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

FormaHoof Benefits For Horses Hoof

FormaHoof is a polyurethane liquid fit, non-invasive, 3D protective support system. It is designed to operate just like a healthy hoof does, flexing and expanding like healthy hoof and providing protection while allowing the horse to move comfortably.

This in turn facilitates better circulation and creates an environment for accelerated growth. As a result, most lame horses experience instant pain relief after FormaHoof application.

Try to run a marathon in flip-flops and imagine how much more comfortable you would be in a well-designed running shoe! This is the simplest way to explain the general difference between FormaHoof and a regular steel or aluminium horseshoe.

The 3D application of FormaHoof offers conformation support, lift and protection for the horse that is just not possible with a traditional 2D horseshoe. Furthermore, FormaHoof’s non-invasive (nail-free) solution offers far enhanced protection to horses’ feet .

No, FormaHoof is not a glue-on shoe.

A glue-on shoe is prone to detachment from the hoof unless applied on a very clean hoof in a very clean environment. With glue-ons, strong adhesives are used to glue them onto the hoof. This may cause damage to the hoof wall, especially when the glue-on is pulled off during the removal process.

Formahoof Advanced Polymer is a very mild adhesive – it is the shape of the application that keeps it on the hoof, meaning that there is no damage to the hoof upon removal.

The FormaHoof application has a natural concave arch built into the solar plane of the Mould. This means that the frog and back of the foot are able to offer support to the weight of the horse as it moves, so there is no constriction to the natural function of the hoof.

In fact, FormaHoof enhances the natural, healthy function of the hoof by correcting any conformational faults or imbalances, thereby providing the hoof and limb with correct, functional support and protection.

FormaHoof is very versatile and can be used to treat a wide variety of hoof pathologies. The top 5 are laminitis, navicular, white line disease, abscesses and bruising. We have also seen FormaHoof used to successfully heal prolapsed digital cushions, to increase sole depth, heal hoof cracks and also correct Negative Palmar/Plantar Angles.

Hooves do not actually breathe! They are predominately made out of a material called keratin and so do not perform any exchange of oxygen, carbon dioxide or the by-products associated and released from those gases.

Good hoof prep is important to create a clean, dry and bacteria/fungus-free environment prior to application and eliminate any type of “hoof funk” from forming underneath the polymer during an application cycle.

Yes, of course you can, if the overall state of your horse allows riding! If you wish to compete in FormaHoof, you may need to check with your local federation. A traditional shoe can be added onto the application without damaging the hoof wall, where required.

All FormaHoof applications are approved for competing by the USDF/USEF and many other federations. FormaHoof Performance applications conform to turf racing and approved by the British Racing Authorities in combination with an aluminium racing plate.

To get the best results for your horse, we strongly recommend that FormaHoof applications are carried out by professional trained farriers, trimmers, or vets. Your horse’s hooves need a regular trim before the FormaHoof application, which we highly recommend is carried out by a suitably qualified person.

It is not mandatory to be a FormaHoof Certified Applicator before applying FormaHoof. The FCA status simply gives a quality seal to individual professionals providing FormaHoof services.

There are a growing number of professionals around the world providing certified FormaHoof services and you can find the one closest to you through the FCA search.

However, there may be other professionals in your area providing FormaHoof services as it is not mandatory to be a FormaHoof Certified Applicator before applying FormaHoof. The FCA status simply gives a quality seal to individual professionals providing FormaHoof services.

If there is no professional in your area, it is possible to get started with your trusted farrier, trimmer, equine podiatrist or vet at any time.

This is quite a difficult question to answer as FormaHoof can be used for such a wide range of podiatry issues in horses, from major restructuring of the hoof capsule after surgery to simple balance adjustments to enhance performance. And consequently, the amount of FormaHoof AP that will be used in an application will vary considerably.

As a FormaHoof Mould can be used up to 100 times if cared for properly, the per-use cost of a Mould is around just €5.
A certified FormaHoof applicator will be able to achieve a good application with approximately 3 tubes of FormaHoof AP per pair of feet, for a cost of just €50 per hoof, including mixing tips.

Consequently, the FormaHoof materials cost per hoof for a normal application can be as low as €55 per hoof (excluding your farrier costs, which vary by location).

Where the hoof has structural abnormalities that require larger quantities of FormaHoof AP, the per-application cost will obviously increase. However, the vastly reduced rehabilitation costs and time and the fact that a lame horse can come sound and return to work far quicker with FormaHoof means that FormaHoof offers exceptional value for money.

Please Note: For European customers the prices exclude VAT, an estimation is provided in the cart but final charge will be based on the Country you select.

Whilst FormaHoof is designed to wear like a natural bare hoof, the answer to this question will depend upon the natural rate of your horse’s hoof growth and wear through work and type of surface.

A FormaHoof application usually stays on for the length of your horse’s regular shoeing cycle, meaning an average of 6-8 weeks. However, some may need a 4-week cycle whilst others may have little growth and wear and remain in a set for 10-12-weeks.
