I grew up with horses and I am forever hopelessly addicted to everything horses. I never planned or really wanted to be a farrier, I always from a teenager had to trim my own horses out of necessity. I’ve been raising horses for 20 years and always trimmed my own. That grew into trimming for a few clients here and there after work for extra horse money. I did that for at least 10 years, and then I took a couple of private farrier courses that changed my life.
I took a 20 yr old rope horse of my late fathers to the first course. He hadn’t been sound for 15 years, what I learnt at that course made him sounder at 20, than he was his entire life! He’s now 27yrs old and still very sound. That was it, I was hooked, and I wanted to fix every sore horse I saw. I am now booked 5 days a week, 2 months in advance. I no longer am taking new clients, I am very busy locally! Although, I’m always up for an interesting case.
March 2020, I bought a 21 yr old Brabant stallion, with big plans of raising some draft cross foals. When I arrived to pick him up, I immediately knew from his posture that he was a laminitic horse. But he was standing, and I thought, how bad could it be?? WELL, I hadn’t dealt with enough founder obviously!!!
Long story short, he was rotated within 5 mm of coming through his soles. It’s been an incredibly long year, but from June- November, with lots of trimming and lots of ups and downs I rotated him back. But over the winter he has still been plagued with hoof abscess’s and poor circulation. So when I saw a testimonial about another stallion that FormaHoof had been life changing for. I knew I had to get it for him. And today, after just 24 hours, he is a different horse already. So excited for “Duke “ and I.
